The task of collecting and examining these details is not easy. It needs much local knowledge and many local books, all of which are hard to come by. Here, as in most branches of Roman history, we want a series of special inquiries into the fortunes of individual Roman towns in Italy and the provinces, carried out by men who combine two things which seldom go together, scientific and parochial knowledge. But a body of evidence already waits to be used, and though its discussion may lead - as it has led me - into topo graphical minutiae, where completeness and certainty are too often unattainable and errors are fatally easy, my results may nevertheless contain some new sug gestions and may help some future workers.

The author touches upon Greek and Roman cities, but the main emphasis is on Babylon as witnessed by the Greek travel writer Herodotus in about 450 BC. While I would have appreciated a more in-depth look at how the ancients solved "modern" problems, but it's still a great introduction to the subject.

This is what you would expect from a short 19th century book. kindle does not show illustrations of which there are many. Lots about Romans, thus itally. It has snippets of some history and too many references to other old books.
I would have liked to know more about the theories of town development.
A good read
This seems to be an excellent book on its topic, but the version is severely hampered by the lack of ANY supporting artwork or photos of the various types of town layouts to which the book regularly refers. There's really hardly any point to making a version of a book about town plans without showing those town plans. One might as well try to listen to the movie "The Matrix" as if it were a radio play; it just wouldn't work without the imagery.
