Have you ever thought about working behind bars? For many nurses, providing health care in a jail or prison is not even a consideration when deciding on a career direction. In fact, many practicing in the criminal justice system consider themselves to be ‘accidental’ correctional nurses. Must nurses have little contact with the criminal justice system in nursing school and so are unlikely to choose the specialty. In fact, the general public would rather not think about our patient population. Prisons are often located in out-of-the-way places and the patient population is invisible to most people. Yet over two million Americans are currently behind bars. That is a lot of people in need of health care. And, at least 95% of prisoners will eventually be released so correctional health care affects public health in a big way. It takes a special person to practice nursing. Nurses must jump into the lives of their patients at a rough point. Illness, injury, and suffering can be ugly, intense, and deeply painful. We deal with body fluids, needles, gaping wounds, and heart-wrenching loss and must take it all in stride. It takes a special nurse to practice correctional nursing. The criminal justice system is an unlikely health care environment and prisoners are a unique patient population. Here, illness, injury, and suffering are treated in the midst of heightened security, reduced resources, and isolation. Yet many nurses find their calling in this unusual health care setting. The variety and nature of patient health needs and the opportunity to bring care and concern into a dehumanizing situation can be unexpected job satisfiers. Correctional nurses deal with a population of disadvantaged and vulnerable patients in a difficult time of life. Lack of prior health care contact means nurses can care for patients with unusual conditions along with the mundane ones. Correctional nursing has been described as ‘real’ nursing as incarcerated patients need health teaching, self-care skills, and chronic disease management. Correctional nursing practice is autonomous and self-directed. Is correctional nursing for you? Find out in the pages of this short book. Take a few hours to explore the many facets of correctional nursing practice. Look behind the curtain into this hidden practice setting. Discover this well-kept nursing secret and decide if you should consider becoming a correctional nurse. Over two million incarcerated patients need you!

This book is a wonderful read! As a correctional nurse administrator, the contents of the book outline all the things I would like for nurses new to corrections to know before even interviewing for the position. Often times I find that nurses perception of what correctional nursing is and the true correctional nursing are on totally different ends of the spectrum. This book also gives new correctional nurses a jump on the lingo used in this setting. Definitely money well spent for someone thinking of getting into correctional nursing!
This is a must read for any nurse considering correctional nursing. The interview tips are crucial in understanding what is needed to ask your future employer/agency. Also understanding your traits to see if you are a good fit for this aspect of nursing is the perfect place to start.
I was hooked after one clinical day at my local jail. I applied, was hired, and began my orientation. The nurse educator was great, but I wish that I could have read this book before I started my correctional journey. Here, in one brief text, are answers to the questions I did not know to ask.

This guide truly describes correctional nursing, from the differences between "jail" and "prison" to "how to work with correctional officers" this book covers all just about everything it needs to! A fantastic resource for recruiters to give to potential employees. (or to have at nursing schools for those students transitioning from ADN to BSN) This could let employees know what to expect in corrections and may reduce the turnover rate at facilities that are always on a tight budget.
There is also a section on how to prepare for interviews, and how to judge if you are coming into a good work environment, what a great topic to cover.
So, to conclude, I loved this book and recommend it. I also recommend following Lorry on social media, she posts news and articles that can keep us sharp!
Thanks again Lorry! All of those things we correctional nurse managers would like our novice candidates to know before they even get into the interview. This book gives a great understanding of this special field in nursing and would save a lot of time and money spent on the wrong person for the job. As an administrator, will be reviewing this with my managers so that they are cognizant of what it is they need in a new hire. Thank you for another awesome tool for the enhancement of correctional nursing!!

Lorry, a highly respected Correctional Heath Nurse, presents the unvarnished truth about working in this field. This is also a great resource for nursing students who want to learn more about this unique and rewarding area of nursing.
I recently took a contract position at a prison, not because I was so excited about working at one, but because I needed a job and recently moved to a new area. This book was very helpful in not only identifying that my thoughts about what I was experiencing were valid and a common experience, but gave some framework for what the specialty does. As a contract, my orientation to the environment, processes and nursing overall was fairly minimal, and I have never worked corrections before. This book helped to give me a basic understanding of how my strengths and weaknesses will affect my job performance. Also, what exactly is a corrections nurse's role. I highly recommend it.
